For the six Sundays of Lent, we will walk together through a series called Counterfeit Gods, based on a book by the same name written by a Manhattan pastor named Timothy Keller. (Spoiler Alert: the point of the series is that we often take the good things in our lives and make them into counterfeit gods.) We turn to these good things – instead of to God – to receive purpose and security and hope. Lent will give us the opportunity to identify the counterfeit gods – or at least the potential counterfeit gods – in our lives.
But we cannot simply identify them. We have to replace them. This Lent, we are all going on a journey: a journey of naming the good things that we are tempted to make into gods and of inviting Jesus Christ to replace these things at the center of our lives.
